February 23rd, 2020
Buriram International Circuit, Thailand–
Hollywood couldn’t make a better story.
The underdog underfunded rookie Dutch driver Joey Alders, racing against last year’s Asian F3 2nd place Champion Red Bull driver Jack Doohan, and a field of F1 test drivers, F2 drivers, and GP3 Champions, against all odds today took home glory for BAR/OLOI [www.OLOIinc.com].
The young Dutch driver, despite only two seasons in formula cars, today made history not only for himself by winning the Asian F3 Drivers Championship, but also, by propelling BlackArts Racing/OLOI to become the first Asia-based team in Asian F3 history to win the Championship.
However, it wasn’t all about the overall Championship wins as Masters pilot Thomas Luedi of Switzerland took the Asian F3 Masters Championship win and teammates Yu Kanamaru and Mihhael Belov had amazing performances, with Belov on the podium in his debut F3 weekend.
Saturday 22nd February Qualifying:
Qualifying set a bad omen for BlackArts Racing for the weekend, with nothing to cheer about.
In Qualifying One [which determined the starting grid for Race One], Alders qualified P5, Mikhael Belov P9, Yu Kanamaru P11 and Thomas Luedi P13.
In Qualifying Two [which determined the starting grid for Race Three; Race Two grid is based on the laptimes of Race One], it was Belov P8, Alders P9, Yu Kanamaru P10, Thomas Luedi P12.
Saturday 22nd February Race One:
With Joey Alders, the Driver’s Championship points leader, starting the race in P5 and only 15 points ahead of 2019 F3 season runner-up/Red Bull driver Jack Doohan, it was all coming down to the wire for the Driver’s Championship, in the last three races.
At the race start, with Doohan on pole and Alders starting in P5, Alders made a flat out run up to P2 from P5 only just halfway through lap one; Alders held onto P2 throughout the race.
Teammate Yu Kanamaru rocketed up from P11 up to 6th by lap three of the 20 lap race, with teammate Belov up to P7 from P9 by lap 5. Kanamaru then dropped down to P11 with tire issues, with F3 rookie Belov up to P6 enjoying a great battle with F1 Test Driver Pierto Fittipaldi. In the end Belov finish just 1.5 seconds behind Fittipaldi in 4th for an amazing result in his F3 debut. Meanwhile, Thomas Luedi had pulled a strong gap on Paul Wong to take the Masters Win.
However, in the ultimate race drama, after leading entire race, and 4.6 seconds ahead in the start of the final lap, 2019 Asian F3 Runner Up/Red Bull driver Jack Doohan had a tire failure on the beginning of the final lap and dropped all the way to 8th place by the time he crossed the checkered flag. Alders thus quickly passed for the win, propelling Alders to majorly extend his points lead over Doohan, a major disappointment for Doohan versus the F3 rookie Joey Alders.
Sunday 23rd February Race Two:
Going into Race Two, with the starting grid determined by the laptime results of Race One, it was Alders starting in P3, Mikhael Belov P7 ,Yu Kanamaru P9 and Luedi in P13, ahead of Paul Wong.
Again, with the Driver’s Championship on the line despite the massive setback for Doohan in Race One, in theory Doohan still had a chance to win the series. The Red Bull driver started on pole position due to setting the fastest laptime in Race One, and got a good start; leading the field while Alders was uncharacteristic conservative, cruising along in P6 to play it safe as he only needed to earn a few points in the last two races to take the 2020 Asian F3 Champion Drivers Trophy.
Meanwhile, BAR teammate the rookie Russian driver Mikhae Belov ripped up the field to P6 and then battled with F1 development driver/W Series F3 Champion Jamie Chadwick, overtaking her in a fearless pass on the outside of T4-T6 which amazed onlookers; then the fearless Belov passed F1 test driver Peitro Fittipaldi. However Belov received a 10 sec penalty for track limits and finished 4th overall; teammate Yu Kanamaru started 9th and moved up to 6th after amazing some amazing on-track battles.
Meanwhile, Thomas Luedi took yet another flag to flag Win in the Masters after once again proving his speed over Paul Wong.
Sunday 23rd February Race Three:
Alders started P9 after a disappointing Qualifying Two. During the race, Alders maintained position to finish in P7, while Belov started in P8 and made a huge run up to finish 3rd for his first F3 podium in his F3 debut weekend, while Kanamaru went all the way from P10 to finish in 5th. Thomas Luedi took the Masters win ahead of Paul Wong, in the process winning the 2020 Asia Formula 3 Masters Championship.
