TIS Boarding Student Wins Asian Formula 4 and Sets Speed Record
Posted on June 21, 2017
Grade 9 student Charles Leong recently clocked the fastest time ever of 1:33:989 in the Asian Formula Renault Series, a Formula Renault championship held on March 17-19 in Zhuhai. He beat his teammate from the Black Arts Racing Team by over a second.
Charles began his racing career driving go-karts at the age of 8. He started racing competitively two years later and then made the impressive leap to Formula 4 cars in October of 2015 at the age of 13.
Formula 4 is a racing car category intended for junior drivers and was created by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)—the International sanctioning and administrative body for motorsport—as an entry-level category for young drivers to bridge the gap between karting and Formula 3. F4 cars can reach top speeds of 210km/hr.
Charles was discovered by the Asia Black Arts Team who saw him driving, and asked him to do a time-test. Charles delivered and is now the number one driver on the team. His natural ability and training is behind his rapid rise in the racing field.
“You cannot be afraid of the speed and brakes; if you are, you won’t go to the limit,” says Charles, adding “I am not afraid because I have a natural feel for the speed and braking. I seem to do well.”
As for next year, his plans are unknown, “If I want to keep racing, I will have to stop school and go to Europe with a new team to race at the next level, but we need sponsorship.”
Charles’ next China Formula 4 race is on June 25th in Beijing.
